BCGS set the standard for Style

Join the Black Country Geological Society (BCGS) and you too can look as cool as this!

The BCGS put on their stylish specs for the talk

Last year the BCGS had an extremely interesting lecture by Dr Imran Rahman of the University of Birmingham entitled ‘Seeing inside the stones’. This talk revealed the new cutting edge techniques using hospital CT scans of fossils (mostly very ancient starfish, sea urchin and sea lily type creatures) have allowed us to look inside the stones to reveal their secrets. The 3-D images created from the scans can show how their morphology evolves over time. Imran also came with a pair of stylish glasses for every member, he said it was to allow us to see the 3-D images, but I wasn’t so sure it was the only reason. Just before Christmas the members evening (with added buffet) allowed the members to tell their personal stories and show off some beautiful finds from the Wrens Nest.

The first lecture of 2012 will be by Dr John Powell of the British Geological Survey talking about ‘The geology and geoarchaeology of Jordan’. John has spent many years working overseas for the British Geological Survey. In particular this talk will focus on the geological influences on the spectacular archaeology in the region called ‘Petra to Pella’ – which became famous as one of the most amazing locations used for making the film ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’.

The first fieldtrip of the New Year is a fossil hunting trip on Saturday 28th January to Cotswolds Aggregate Quarries containing fossil rich Oxford Clays and glacial gravels. Later in the year the society will have talks about Snowball Earth, Permafrost and the Staffa Lava Formation on Mull. The planned fieldtrips include a guided explore of the geology around Stourbridge in the West Midlands, Lickey Hills Champions Project and more yet to be arranged.

If you would like to come along and look cool like us at our regular lectures and fieldtrips, please pop in to have a chat at our next meeting on the 23rd January 2012 with no obligation to join. Meetings are held at Dudley Museum & Art Gallery, St James’s Road, Dudley, DY1 1HU. Tel. 01384 815575. 7.30 for 8 o’clock start.
